PUBH 260 Community Advocacy in Public Health
This course provides students with theoretical models and practical skills needed for community organization with the goal of improving population health. Students will learn assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of public health programming. Students will learn and demonstrate skills in community assessment and organization techniques including: stakeholder identification, coalition-building, grass-roots advocacy, and the identification of funding sources.

Course Objectives
- Recognize the importance and challenges of public health advocacy.
- Analyze a comprehensive community needs assessment and identify existing health disparities among the population.
- Identify effective principles of community engagement, grassroots advocacy, and coalition and capacity building.
- Describe how to effectively use media advocacy to raise awareness of public health issues.
- Illustrate the various ways using the court system can be an effective advocacy strategy.
- Distinguish between legislative and regulatory advocacy and demonstrate how to effectively execute these strategies.
- Explain the importance of evaluation in the advocacy process and discuss different evaluation methods.
