FIRE 208 Fire Department Incident Safety Officer

This course provides students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to function as an incident safety officer. Major topics include risk management principles, environmental and physiological hazards, building construction and utility hazards, recognizing critical incident stress, reading smoke, fire development hazards, incident communications, conducting a scene survey, vehicle incident management, incident operations, helicopter landing zones, accident investigation, commercial fire hazards, hazardous materials, technical rescue incidents, and mass casualty incidents.

Course Objectives

  1. Perform the role of the Incident Safety Officer within the incident command system.
  2. Monitor the Incident Action Plan, conditions, activities, and operations of an incident.
  3. Manage the transfer of Incident Safety Officer duties.
  4. Stop, alter, or suspend operations based on imminent threats posed to firefighter safety.
  5. Monitor and determine the incident scene conditions.
  6. Monitor the accountability system.
  7. Determine hazardous incident conditions.
  8. Identify motor vehicle incident scene hazards.
  9. Monitor radio transmissions.
  10. Identify the incident strategic requirements (e.g., fire, technical rescue, hazmat).
  11. Determine the hazards associated with the designation of a landing zone and interface with helicopters.
  12. Notify the Incident Commander of the need for intervention resulting from an occupational exposure to atypical stressful events.
  13. Determine hazardous energy sources that can affect responder health and safety.
  14. Monitor conditions, including weather, fire fighter activities, and work cycle durations.
