PSYC 207 Theories of Personality

Through this course, students will develop an understanding of the major theories of personality and how personality is assessed. Students will explore how personality is related to normal and abnormal development and outcomes such as health. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply research skills and critically analyze issues related to personality psychology.

Course Objectives

  1. Compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of each of the major theoretical approaches to personality.
  2. Apply personality concepts, methods, and/or theories to an analysis of a person's behavior, thinking patterns, and emotional reactions.
  3. Apply critical thinking skills to analyze personality-related processes that underlie individual differences in behavior.
  4. Compare and contrast assessment instruments used in personality psychology, including cross-cultural fairness.
  5. Analyze contemporary approaches to assessing personality.
  6. Apply introductory research skills used by psychologists to interpret and/or critique personality research in popular media and scholarly journals.
  7. Write clearly and effectively using appropriate, properly attributed content that demonstrates the writer's understanding of personality.
