MLTS 201 Introduction to the Medical Laboratory
This course combines lecture and laboratory practice. It allows students to demonstrate professionalism and interpersonal skills while achieving competence with common laboratory procedures such as phlebotomy, making solutions, using aseptic techniques, and handling laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, and pipettes. Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge in laboratory mathematics, safety, medical regulations, and medical ethics.
Hours Weekly
2 hours theory, 4 hours lab weekly
Course Objectives
- Demonstrate and evaluate proper techniques when performing venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures – with emphasis on personal safety.
- Demonstrate proper handling of patients/specimens and evaluate situations that may cause adverse issues.
- Demonstrate skill with the microscope, centrifuge, and other laboratory equipment.
- Demonstrate competence with laboratory mathematics and quality control calculations and interpretation.
- Comply with laboratory safety protocols by demonstrating proper technique in using pipettes and other products to make solutions and calculate analytical concentrations.
- Discuss and interpret medical regulations.
- Discuss, interpret, and evaluate personal and medical ethics issues with emphasis on issue recognition, self-awareness as applicable to ethical interpretations, and efficacy in the application of ethical perceptions and concepts.
- Demonstrate proper educational techniques by creating and giving a formal class presentation.
- Perform basic research using computer technology and then present findings.
