DHYG 257 Dental Hygiene Ethics and Jurisprudence
This course will discuss basic ethical principles related to the Code of Ethics for the American Dental Hygienists Association. Topics will include: ethical problem-solving, social issues, reporting procedures for abuse and neglect, and the preparation for dental hygiene practice and business.

Course Objectives
- 1. Differentiate between a right with a duty and a right with a privilege.
- 2. Identify the core values found in the Code of Ethics of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, and identify one’s core belief(s) in relation to an ethical issue or issues.
- 3. Apply alternative ethical perspectives to one’s own, in relation to an ethical issue or issues.
- 4. Compare the ethical principles found in code of ethics, informed consent, patients’ bill of rights, and other documents related to patient care.
- 5. Solve ethical dilemmas using a decision-making process, recognizing the ethical concerns relating to a specific issue or issues.
- 6. Compare the concepts of criminal law and the laws regarding dental hygiene practice.
- 7. Interpret the aspects of practice management in a dental office.
- 8. Discuss the role of the dental hygienist as related to the business of dentistry and time
management. - 9. Differentiate the different roles and practices of the dental hygienist.
- 10. Prepare for the role of dental hygienist by developing a resume, interview techniques, and
job searching skills. - 11. Devise a plan for long-term success as a dental hygienist.
- 12. Recognize the signs of abuse (child, spouse, elderly, etc.) and reporting practices for the licensed dental hygienist.
