CRIM 102 Criminology

This course introduces students to the basic theories, fundamental facts, and problems associated with the science of criminology, while providing a systematic basis for the study of criminals and criminal behavior as it relates to the criminal justice system in America.

Course Objectives

  1. Compare and contrast the theories of "crime causation" and assess them from the biological, psychological, sociological, and political perspectives of criminal behavior.
  2. Compare and contrast the social, political, and economic components of the criminal justice system.
  3. Analyze the sociological concepts of deviance and crime.
  4. Describe the critical factors and rationales of criminal behavior and relate them to the concepts of crime and criminality.
  5. Explain why studying crime and criminal behavior is socially important.
  6. Analyze contemporary criminological thought and evaluate bias in the formation of classical criminological theory.
  7. Describe the social forces which combine to produce law and societal response to deviance.
