ARTS 122 Introduction to Film Photography

This introductory black-and-white film photography course covers camera operation, exposure challenges, composition, lighting, film processing, and darkroom printing with a focus on creating imagery as a means of self-expression.  A film SLR camera with manual capabilities and a tripod are required.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and organize information and ideas to develop preliminary concepts as part of the creative process.
  2. Generate ideas, explore possibilities, and consider alternatives to reinforce preliminary concepts.
  3. Analyze and evaluate ideas or outcomes throughout the creative process.
  4. Apply information and ideas gathered through a creative process to other contexts.
  5. Use a film camera to achieve competencies in photography.
  6. Apply the basic principles of lighting and exposure to enhance imagery.
  7. Identify and apply the elements of photographic composition.
  8. Learn how to process negatives and print photographic prints in the darkroom.
