MUSA 100 Fundamentals of Music

Previously MUSC 100. Open to all interested students, this course is an introduction to the concepts of reading and writing music. It is intended for students with limited musical knowledge or background in music who wishes to study music theory, or for the student who wishes to learn to read music. Primary concepts of note reading, rhythm, scales, key signatures and intervals will be studied along with fundamental keyboard skills, simple melodic and rhythmic dictation, and elementary sightreading.

Course Objectives

  1. Define basic music terminology.
  2. Identify notes on the treble and base clef, including ledger line notes.
  3. Count the rhythmic notation of selected music using seven different note values.
  4. Read simple music on the staff and play it on a musical instrument in proper time.
  5. Identify and apply theories and concepts related to creativity and invention in music.
  6. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into analysis and problem-solving
    methods by creating a handmade percussion instrument out of ordinary household items.
  7. Pose and address questions related to creative expression throughout the process of
    composing and performing rhythmic phrases using different note values.
  8. Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze the role of music in illuminating the human
    condition by creating a musical composition that includes melody and harmony and follows
    a specific musical form.
  9. Construct all fifteen major and minor scales using accidentals.
  10. Identify intervals and triads by their quality: major, minor, perfect, augmented, or diminished.
  11. Write the fifteen major key signatures and identify the key.
  12. Write the fifteen minor key signatures which are relative to the fifteen major key signatures
    and identify the key.
  13. Write three types of minor scales, natural, harmonic, and melodic, using accidentals.
