HEED 113 Drug Use and Abuse

This course will examine drug use relevant to the use and abuse of drugs. Upon completion of this course students will be able to identify the physiological, psychological, social, and cultural implications of drug use. In addition, the historical and legal aspects of drug use will be presented in the context of this course.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and define categories of drugs and their physiological effects on the central nervous
    system.
  2. Compare and contrast various theories of drug use and abuse, and establish your own
    position on the issue.
  3. Summarize the psychological and social effects of drug use on the individual and the family.
  4. Discuss the impact of historical, philosophical, and legal issues to drug-taking behavior.
  5. Evaluate the relevance and quality of the research on prevention, intervention, and treatment
    strategies for drug abuse.
  6. Apply information learned to an analysis of personal drug use and develop decision-making
    skills necessary for practicing responsible health behaviors.
