FILM 201 British Film

This course is a study of contemporary British society and culture through the medium of film. The aim of the course is to trace the history of film in Britain, and show the interconnection between artistic expression and the historical and cultural realities of Britain from the dawn of cinema in the early 1900s to the present. This chronologically organized course looks at major directors, actors and genres, exploring the theme of love in the 1940s, the great run of comedies in the 1950s, and the socially engaged themes that have preoccupied British cinema in recent decades.

Course Objectives

  1. Engage in a cinematic exploration of various worldviews as it relates to Britain.
  2. Describe British history, cultures, values, and aesthetics of self and others through an exploration of cultural mores, family life, religion, art, and literature as depicted in British film.
  3. Identify and explain multiple perspectives when exploring subjects within British culture.
  4. Analyze global events and issues and describe the interconnection between artistic expression and the historical and cultural realities of Britain from economic, political, environmental, aesthetic, or social perspectives.
  5. Identify and apply critical theories and concepts related to enduring and contemporary issues of aesthetics, creativity, humanism, meaning, and/or invention in British film.
  6. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into analysis and problem-solving methods through and exploration of World War II-era British films and their commentary on the war.
  7. Pose and address questions related to the confluence of creative and humanistic expression with social and cultural contexts in the socially engaged themes that have preoccupied British cinema in recent decades.
  8. Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze the role of British cinema in illuminating the human condition and search for meaning.
  9. Identify ethical issues arising from cross-cultural study in British film.
