ENGL 105 Special Topics in Literature

In this course, students study literature that shares a common theme or that is limited to a particular historical period or genre. In addition, students are introduced to critical reading strategies, literary criticism, and a diverse and expanding literary canon.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and discuss ways that texts relate to enduring and/or contemporary issues.
  2. Compose an original response to a text.
  3. Analyze how writers in different times, places, and cultures have explored a common theme.
  4. Identify and discuss ways in which related art (film, painting, music, etc.) help illuminate the text and the historical context or theme.
  5. Analyze literary works for an academic audience.
  6. Use a variety of media to convey characteristics of literature employing various cultural, historical, and literary contexts.
  7. Communicate effectively an understanding of the literature and exchange ideas with others.
