DANC 114 History and Culture of Hip-Hop

In this course, students will discover the multi-cultural roots of Hip-Hop and discuss its development in America and around the world. Students will also be exposed to elements of Hip-Hop culture including the various dance forms, graffiti, emceeing, and deejaying.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and apply critical theories and concepts related to the creativity and aesthetics of HipHop
    culture that derive from North American culture and other world cultures.
  2. Identify pioneers of Hip-Hop, their contributions to Hip-Hop culture, major dates, and
    important events in Hip-Hop history.
  3. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into analysis and problem-solving methods
    by using Hip-Hop constructs as a framework for self-expression though dance.
  4. Pose and address questions related to the confluence of creative expression within social
    and cultural contexts by comparing, contrasting, and evaluating the elements of Hip-Hop,
    how they became a part of the culture, and the social conditions from which Hip-Hop
    developed.
  5. Assess, reflect, and critically analyze the role of Hip-Hop dance in illuminating the human
    condition by critically analyzing Hip-Hop’s cross-cultural impact in the U.S. and globally.
