CMSY 161 Computer and Internet Basics
This course is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to work toward the Internet and Core Computing Certification (IC3). After successful completion of this course, students will have basic competencies in computing fundamentals, software applications, and the Internet. This course is designed for the beginning student and does not include advanced concepts.

Course Objectives
- Identify basic features of computers, including types of computers and basic maintenance.
- Identify how hardware and software work together.
- Use an operating system to manipulate a computer’s desktop, files, and disks.
- Use software applications to start and exit an application, use help, perform common editing
and formatting functions, and modify data. - Identify and use basic functions of common word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.
- Use electronic mail to send and receive messages and insert attachments.
- Identify the appropriate use of online communication/collaboration tools and netiquette.
- Use a Web browser to navigate the Web, use a search engine, and identify and evaluate issues
regarding the quality of information. - Identify the risks of using computer hardware and software, and how to use computers and the
Internet safely, ethically, and legally.
