ARTS 123 Introduction to Printmaking

Designed for non-visual art majors, this course is an introduction to the theories, practices, and techniques of printmaking, with an emphasis on foundational printmaking concepts. Working with relief and monotype methods, students will learn the use of various tools and materials especially made for printmaking application and processes. The emphasis is on creating works of art through traditional and non-traditional printmaking conventions, visual organization, composition, and content. This course also will teach the importance of working in a collaborative environment shared in the printmaking workshop and studio. The working space is set up in a way that students will work with multiple and unique works of art characteristic of printmaking processes and printing techniques. Students will explore the philosophical and ethical issues that art making presents, and its effects on the fine arts. Demonstrations, lectures, and critiques support studio assignments and instruction in traditional and contemporary formats.

Course Objectives

  1. Define and apply the specialized vocabulary unique to printmaking.
  2. Discuss the art of print and printmaking from both historical and contemporary contexts.
  3. Explore a variety of materials and tools to produce traditional and non-traditional prints.
  4. Develop technical proficiency working with specialized tools to prepare substrates for printing and image making through a variety of approaches including the use of an etching press.
  5. Understand the history of artistic papers and explore the variety of printmaking papers and their usage.
  6. Present a portfolio of prints demonstrating progression in craftsmanship and quality.
  7. Identify and apply critical theories and concepts related to past and contemporary issues of aesthetics and creativity in printmaking.
  8. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into analysis and problem-solving methods throughout the creative and production processes in printmaking.
  9. Analyze the use of printmaking to affect emotional response, public opinion, and societal issues.
  10. Assess and critically analyze the role of creative and aesthetic activities in illuminating the human condition through the unique process of printmaking by the manipulation of imagery in news media, advertising, and entertainment media.
