PSYC-102 Advanced General Psychology

After studying the topics of abnormal psychology, learning, psychological research methods, intelligence, social psychology, and aggression, students will be able to objectively describe behavior, distinguish between normal and abnormal behavior, apply basic learning concepts and principles, critically evaluate secondary psychological sources, write a psychological research paper, identify important issues and problems concerning research, describe research on a variety of psychological topics, and critique an article on a current social issue. This course is designed primarily for persons who are interested in taking additional psychology courses or wish an introduction to scientific psychology. Students may proceed through this course at their own pace.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Summarize written material by describing the central idea and key points, by analyzing
    important definitions, and by identifying psychological evidence (Critical Evaluative
    Reading).
  2. 2. Notice, understand, analyze and evaluate psychological information in the mass media
    (Critical Evaluative Thinking).
  3. 3. Think critically about several sources on a topic to draw conclusions.
  4. 4. Describe the scope of scientific psychology.
  5. 5. Describe and cite examples of the major research methods used by psychologists to
    gather their facts. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of each research method.
  6. 6. Recall selected psychological concepts and principles from the field of learning,
    statistics, intelligence, social psychology, and abnormal behavior.
  7. 7. Find library information quickly and thoroughly on a topic.
  8. 8. Synthesize ideas while using proper psychological form for written work (APA format).
