HIST-210 History of Latin America

Students will be able to describe the political, economic, cultural and social development of Latin America from prehistoric time up to the present day. The course will include a detailed study of Latin America's geography and its impact on Latin American cultures. Students will be able to analyze the major trends of Latin American history, early cultures and civilizations, spread of European contacts, impact of European conquest and colonization, and the development of independent Latin American nation-states.

Course Objectives

1. 1. Analyze the relationship between local and international developments and the way in which
   they have profoundly influenced the course of Latin American history.
2. 2. Study primary sources as evidence to understand various worldviews, values, and
   perspectives within and across Latin American cultures.
3. 3. Explain long-term changes and continuities in Latin American history.
4. 4. Describe how contemporary Latin American society has been shaped by colonization,
   industrialization, and the Cold War.
5. 5. Articulate the origins and results of the Wars of Independence and the major revolutions in
   Mexico, Cuba, and Central America.
6. 6. Understand the concept of cultural syncretism and the way in which it is manifested in Latin
   American culture (music, religion, dance, etc.).
