ENGL-093 Directed Studies in Reading

Directed Studies in Reading is a developmental course designed to strengthen students' reading skills. In this course, students in need of intensive reading instruction will complete prescribed activities to develop vocabulary and improve reading comprehension.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Correctly identify the topic and main idea of a passage.
  2. 2. Locate key words and recall important facts.
  3. 3. Make logical conclusions based on material read.
  4. 4. Identify the meaning of an assigned set of vocabulary words.
  5. 5. Use assigned vocabulary words correctly in sentences.
  6. 6. Determine the meaning of a word by the way it is used in context.
  7. 7. Use prefixes, roots and suffixes to build vocabulary skills.
  8. 8. Use word attack skills to increase sight vocabulary.
  9. 9. Analyze character and plot in literature.
