EDUC-190 Field Experience: Introduction To Education

This is a field-based course that provides the opportunity to apply the theories and methods learned regarding best practices for creating and maintaining a positive and productive learning environment (EDUC-110). Students will analyze a variety of learner characteristics that influence student development and academic achievement as is appropriate for age/grade level and professional specialization.

Prerequisite

This course is only available to those students who have successfully completed the equivalent of Introduction to Education at another higher education institution but who have not completed 15 hours of field experience as part of that course (EDUC-110). Additionally, permission of Director of Teacher Education is required in order to enroll in the course

Course Objectives

1. 1. Examine the varied aspects of teaching, including the knowledge and skill
   characteristics of effective teachers, to become aware of the current realities in
   today’s classrooms.
2. 2. Analyze the ways in which a teacher can use technology to assist in teaching and
   learning.
3. 3. Describe those strategies that create positive learning environments and wellmanaged
   classrooms.
4. 4. Describe the characteristics of diverse learners and the implications of cultural and
   learning differences on educational equity.
5. 5. Explain how schools and the curriculum are a reflection of societal and cultural
   values and priorities.
6. 6. Evaluate instructional strategies, classroom materials, and assessment strategies for
   their effectiveness in responding to individual learner strengths, needs, and
   capabilities.
7. 7. Describe those factors that significantly affect the culture of the classroom as well as
   educational practices.
