ARTT-141 Basic Photography

This course will focus on developing the skills necessary to identify and produce a good photograph and on acquiring a thorough knowledge of appropriate photographic equipment. In addition, students will learn the basic elements of design, composition, and lighting, as well as develop an understanding of the technical skills in photography including cameras, films, exposure meters, depth of field, film development and print processing. Students must have access to a fully adjustable 35mm SLR FILM camera.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Define and apply the specialized vocabulary used in photography.
  2. 2. Describe the differences between various types of cameras, lenses, and films.
  3. 3. Identify what elements constitute effective photographic composition.
  4. 4. Research and present a report on the works of outstanding past or present photographers from other
    cultures as well as America to attain global awareness and learn to recognize a good photograph.
  5. 5. Operate a fully adjustable 35 mm SLR camera.
  6. 6. Apply the principles of proper exposure in composing and producing photographs under natural lighting.
  7. 7. Develop black and white negatives.
  8. 8. Enlarge and process black and white prints.
  9. 9. Apply appropriate darkroom techniques to enhance print quality.
  10. 10. Apply proper photofinishing techniques.
  11. 11. Perform basic maintenance on his/her camera equipment.
  12. 12. Analyze and critique his/her own and other class member's photographs.
  13. 13. Develop a portfolio of photographs that demonstrate the degree of his/her mastery of the course
    objectives.
