This area of study is designed to provide the necessary theoretical and practical skills required for entry-level human service workers in community settings such as: hospitals, mental health centers, social service agencies, substance abuse counseling sites, and gerontology centers. The curriculum is intended to provide the student with a consolidated body of knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to function in a variety of health and social services positions. The student may choose from two tracks: human services or chemical dependency. The area of study also provides preparation for transfer to four-year schools and upgrading knowledge and skills of persons already working in community and social service areas.
General Education Core
Students enrolled in transfer patterns must take a minimum of 30 credits in General Education. Each student’s total of general education and required courses must equal at least 60 semester hours of credit.
English Composition
Arts & Humanities
The Arts & Humanities requirement may alternatively be fulfilled by completing a World Language Sequence plus one of the following courses: SPCH-151, THET-101, THET-102, THET-103, THET-202, THET-241, or WMST-193. Students who complete a World Language Sequence are not required to complete the 2 open credits of Core Electives.

**These courses provide academic coursework to attain certification as a Certified Supervised Counselor - Alcohol and Drug. Additional clinical fieldwork in the addiction field is required.
A graduate should be able to
- 1. Explain the historical development of human services, as it relates to the development of the theoretical framework.
- 2. Analyze a service problem, select appropriate strategies or interventions, and evaluate the outcomes.
- 3. Understand the psychological aspects of managing client/worker relationships.
- 4. Illustrate an understanding of ethical principles which guide the practice of human service.
- 5. Apply theoretical and practical skills acquired in the human services practicum.
