WELD 205 Shielded Metal Arc Welding II
This course builds advanced proficiency in shielded metal arc welding and in thermal cutting and gouging processes, including oxyfuel, plasma arc, and carbon arc methods All classroom instruction and laboratory practice follow the American Welding Society (AWS) standards to ensure safe, industry-aligned performance.
Prerequisite
WELD 105
Hours Weekly
2 hours lecture, 4 hours lab
A graduate should be able to
- Identify and interpret an advanced variety of SMAW electrode classifications, as well as explain their flux composition and practical application.
- Demonstrate an advanced level of proficiency and technique in SMAW operations, with the ability to weld in all positions, on any joint design.
- Select appropriate electrodes, polarity, and amperage settings based on material type, thickness, and welding position.
- Apply corrective and preventive techniques to weld discontinuities and defects according to applicable AWS codes and standards.
- Perform advanced cutting and gouging operations using OFC, PAC, and CAC-A processes in a variety of practical scenarios.
- Demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to pass multiple weld tests and earn official American Welding Society (AWS) certifications.
