AUTO 202 Repair and Maintenance of Automotive Brake Systems

This course examines the diagnosis of different types of brake systems. Students will use state-of-the-art testing equipment to check, service, and repair automotive brake systems. This course maps to the ASE A5 - Brakes Certification.

Course Objectives

  1. Diagnose, service, and repair hydraulic brake systems, including master cylinders, lines, hoses, valves, and wheel cylinders/calipers, using correct procedures and safety standards.
  2. Inspect, measure, and machine or replace brake system components including drums, rotors, pads, shoes, and hardware to meet manufacturer specifications and ensure safe operation.
  3. Test and repair power-assist systems (vacuum, hydraulic, and electric assist) and verify proper function using appropriate diagnostic tools.
  4. Diagnose and repair antilock brake systems (ABS), traction control, and electronic stability control systems, interpreting scan data and performing system calibration as required.
  5. Perform brake system bleeding, fluid service, and contamination diagnosis using manufacturer-approved equipment and environmental safety practices.
  6. Demonstrate correct use of brake diagnostic tools and equipment, including micrometers, dial indicators, scan tools, and pressure gauges, while applying workplace safety and procedural standards.
